What is a decanter?
The dictionary terminology for a decanter is: A vessel, usually an ornamental glass bottle, for holding and serving wine, brandy, or similiar liquids.
Wikipedia says:
A decanter is a vessel with a stopper that is used to hold the decantation of a liquid which may contain sediment, such as wine. Decanters vary in shape and design.
And now a little history lesson:
Throughout the history of wine, decanters have played a significant role in the serving of wine and other liquids. The ancient Romans pioneered the use of glass as a material. The Venetians introduced glass decanters during the Renaissance period and pioneered the style of a long slender neck that opens to a wide body. In the 1730's British glass makers introduced the stopper to limit expsure to air. Since then decanters have been designed in various moderinzed shapes.
